Master's in Slavic Languages and Literatures

The master’s in Slavic Studies is a programme offered jointly by the University of Bern and the University of Fribourg. The programme is particularly notable for its diverse range of contents and languages: in addition to specialising in literature or linguistics (90 ECTS for the major programme), students can also earn credits through internships or interdisciplinary collaboration (literature and linguistics or philosophy/intellectual history). The joint language programme offers a choice of focus among four Slavic languages.

Master Slavistik

The master’s programme offers a wide range of courses that enable students to engage in in-depth academic study of Slavic languages, literatures and cultures in their historical, social and political contexts.

Students acquire extensive knowledge of Slavic linguistics and literature as well as basic or advanced language skills in Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Polish, Russian or Ukrainian. These skills can be improved during stays abroad at partner universities. In a transfer module, students (of the 90 ECTS major programme) either expand their knowledge in an interdisciplinary manner (linguistics and literary studies or philosophy/intellectual history) or gain initial professional experience during an internship.
Current topics such as multilingualism, language contact, migration, cultural transfer and social change play just as much a role in the programme as classic questions of Slavic studies.
The programme is characterised by an in-depth study of theoretical foundations, broad methodological training and interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approaches. The master’s programme thus prepares students for both further academic careers and a wide range of professional fields.
