Whereas up until a few years ago, the typical career prospects for graduates with a Master's degree in Italian Language and Literature were largely limited to teaching at the secondary school level, this situation has now changed. This is due in part to the broad-based education provided by the BA and MA programs in Italian Language and Literature at the University of Bern. A survey of former students of Italian Language and Literature taken in 2005 revealed that the areas in which the graduates now work are quire varied and extremely multifaceted as well. Former students of Italian Language and Literature are now teachers, translators, PR specialists, mid-level and high-level government employees, and journalists.
