The Institute of History of the University of Bern is seeking to fill a full time professor position (open rank) in Ancient History and the History of Reception of Antiquity, beginning August 1st, 2026.
\r\n\r\nThe successful candidate is responsible for the subject area of ancient history in research and teaching.
\r\n\r\nThey must be able to teach the full range of Ancient History courses and have research expertise in Greek as well as Roman history. Additional research expertise in the History of Reception of Greco-Roman Antiquity is required as well as the ability to teach in this area. The position comes with a thematically and methodologically diverse teaching load of 4 (assistant professor level) or 8 (associate professor or full professor) weekly lessons in addition to the advising of student theses on BA, MA and PhD levels. Applicants are expected to participate in academic governance and interdisciplinary research collaboration.
\r\n\r\nThe successful candidate will connect with existing research activities at the Institute of History. In particular, they should actively contribute to the development of the transepochal research cluster at the Institute. We expect the candidate to participate in interdisciplinary research platforms, including the Walter Benjamin Kolleg, Forum Antike Bern and the doctoral program in Classics.
\r\n\r\nDepending on qualifications, the position will be filled at the level of assistant professor, associate professor or full professor. Requirements for an assistant professor (with tenure track) include an exceptional dissertation, teaching experience, and a Habilitation (second book project) in progress. Requirements for an associate or full professor include a Habilitation (or equivalent) and a record of successful acquiring of research grants. Command of the German language for teaching and administration is expected or is to be acquired no more than two years after taking up the position. Extensive knowledge of French, English and additional languages are desirable.
